About
Hot Knife

We're a small practice that writes and designs. We've been doing both since before the web had a name for it.

Our story

2003

Founded as a web design studio.

2026

A design and content development practice.

The hardest part of most projects isn't the code or the pixels. It's making the idea clear.

Hot Knife Design started in 2003 as a web design studio. In 2026 it's a design and content development practice, built on what the years in between taught us.

We stay small on purpose. Clients work directly with the person doing the work. When a project needs more hands, we bring in research, development, and design partners from a network we've built over two decades.

People

Jon Follett

Jon Follett

Jon is a writer, editor, and designer. He was lead author and editor of Designing for Emerging Technologies (O'Reilly, 2016) and wrote The Future of Product Design. He co-authored a chapter of O'Reilly's Beautiful Data, wrote a chapter of the UX Careers Handbook, and wrote the “Beautiful Information” column for UXmatters. His essays have appeared in A List Apart and Digital Web, translated into Russian, Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Before that, he designed and produced the annual report for Massachusetts' $50 billion public pension system. His first design job was at Saul Bellow's literary magazine, News from the Republic of Letters, and he still cares a great deal about typography. He also records electronic music for Triplicate Records.
